Claus Stäcker

Director of Programs for Africa, Deutsche Welle

Claus Stäcker, joined DW in 2013 and acts as Dirctor of Programs for Africa - including radio, online, social media and TV content in Amharic, English, French, Hausa, Kiswahili, Portuguese and German.

Stäcker studied journalism in Leipzig. He started his professional career at the German news agency ADN/ddp and the public broadcaster MDR. In 1992 and 1994 he participated in university exchange programs in South Africa. In 1994 he witnessed the end of Apartheid and the resulting South African parliamentary elections as a freelance correspondent for the German press and the renowned South African weekly Mail and Guardian. He also finished post-gradual studies in Cultural History of Africa at the University of Cape Town. After further study at the US School of Journalism at the University of Missouri and an RIAS commission internship at CNN, Atlanta he reported as freelancer from different African countries. From 2008 to 2013 he worked as ARD correspondent for southern Africa in Johannesburg.
